Augustine’s Prayer of Thoughtful Wonder: “To Praise You is Our Souls’ Delight”

Augustine shows us how to pray when we feel God’s presence and when we don’t:

O Lord in whom all things live,

who commanded us to seek you,

who are always ready to be found:

to know you is life,

to serve you is freedom,

to praise you is our souls’ delight

We bless you and adore you,

we worship you and magnify you,

we give thanks to you for your great glory,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

This prayer by St. Augustine echos numerous biblical quotes, including the words of Paul the Apostle in his letter to the gathering of Christians in Corinth:

But we all, with unveiled face beholding

as in a mirror the glory of the Lord,

are being transformed into the same image

from glory to glory,

just as from the Lord, the Spirit. (2 Cor 3:18)

and David’s famous 23rd Psalm:

“…He restores my soul…”
